Facing four. That's where we are. Forgive me if I weep a little through all the joy. I am happy we are here. There is something exhilarating about watching a child grow and seeing him change. There is something gratifying about age as it pushes a child in that slow, insistent pace. But I am not naive. I would be lying if I said it didn't sting. I'd be lying if I said I wish it would slow down a little. I'd be faking it if I said it wasn't bittersweet. His face is losing that baby look. His belly is flat now. I can't remember the last time I put on his clothes for him. His speech is clearer and he corrects his "L" when it sounds like a "W." He is aware of things like subtext and moods. Self-centeredness is the one grand mark of all children and I have watched this characteristic dwindle in him. The times they are a'changin. And this momma's heart is tender.
My deepest desires as his mother. . .
That he would always know I admire and love his father.
That he would feel respected by me, even at such a young age.
That I would know how to nurture his independence and nurture his heart at the same time.
That Jesus would become real to him.
One thing that's still true of him and hasn't changed since birth?
He still needs a nap. =)
